World War Z - Next Level VFX!

World War Z - Next Level VFX!

Hi dudes! It's been a while since I've seen a film where the special effects really surprised me. The thing is that these days everything is ordinary: it's absolutely normal to go to the cinema and see giant robots, extreme explosions, blah blah blah.

As a technician I thought that the fight with the Lizard in The Amazing Spiderman was wonderful, (have a look at the breakdown!), but the work done by our friends over at MPC for World War Z is just next level!

Whether you like or dislike the film (I’ve heard mixed reviews but in my opinion it’s like a breath of fresh air in the Zombie genre), we couldn't say anything bad about the effects.

The level of detail in the simulations is so high that I got shivers thinking about the guys working on the project (and I don't even know if we can talk about simulation, given that watching the breakdown I've got a feeling that the zombies might have been animated MANUALLY, instead of using Massive or other simulation software/ If this is the case I'm sure that some real lives must’ve been sacrificed while making the human-column scene).

But don’t just take my word for it, have a look yourself and prepare for your jaw to drop... not for real though... we are not zombies, quite yet.

  • DHW:

They used a combination of MPC proprietary software ALICE (Artificial Life Crowd Engine) inputted with mocap data and some hand animated Zombies where needed.
