Winning in Westeros

Winning in Westeros

As you can tell from the numerous blog posts, we here at Escape are pretty big fans of HBO’s Game Of Thrones and I can honestly say that if there were a parade I would be leading it.

Personally, I can’t pinpoint what it is in specific that I love the most. For me, Game Of Thrones is just the total package incorporating great actors, polarizing characters, breath-taking shooting locations, engaging storylines and visually stunning CG. And most importantly as a whole it caters to my ever so slightly hidden nerdy side! And we obviously aren’t only fans, Twitter and Facebook are still abuzz with Westeros related tweets and status updates.

So it comes as no surprise that Game Of Thrones, since its television debut back in 2011, has been sweeping award shows and leaving its competitors in the dust. And as of September 15th 2012, HBO have had to make additional space in their trophy cabinet after a successful haul of 6 awards from the Creative Art Emmy Awards.

Game Of Thrones took home the prizes for Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series, Outstanding Sound Editing For A Series, Outstanding Makeup For A Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic) and shared the Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series prize with HBO’s other smash hit show Boardwalk Empire.

And the buck doesn’t stop there.

International visual effects studios, Pixomondo, as the primary visual effects vendor for Game of Thrones season two, took home Outstanding Special Visual Effects for their work on the season two finale Valar Morghulis. Using nine out of their eleven worldwide studios, Pixomondo completed up to 140 shot on each of the 10 one-hour long episodes and delivered matte paint, creature, fluid simulation, crowd replication work and all of the CG carnage we love so much.

Take a look at the video above for the VFX breakdown of Game Of Thrones season two and let the countdown to season three begin. March 2013 can’t come around quick enough and in the meantime I’ll have to be satisfied sitting and writing this from my make-shift replica iron throne.

Fare thee well minions of the realm!
