The Academy met last night to cull the list of films in the running for a Visual Effects Oscar nomination to a mere ten. The list is below, in alphabetical order.
The Academy will vote after the "Bake-Off" on Thursday, January 19 for the even shorter list of five films to be nominated for the Oscar. These nominees will be announced on Tuesday morning, January 24 and the Awards Ceremony will be on Sunday, February 26th.
- "Captain America: The First Avenger"
- "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2"
- "Hugo"
- "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol"
- "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"
- "Real Steel"
- "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"
- "Transformers: Dark of the Moon"
- "The Tree of Life"
- "X-Men: First Class"
I am kind of surprised that "Thor" and/or "Super 8" didn't make the cut. How about you? What's missing? And what's your prediction for the winner?

Take Shelter should be on the list as well
I hadn't seen that one - thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to check it out!
Susan? Pirates? Wasn't that last year? I do trust you and my brain is old a feeble but... really?
Hi Shannan! Apparently it is so - I've found a couple of sites that confirm it (my brain she is also not what she used to be...)
I found it here:

How many "short list" nominations is it for the entire Pirates franchise? Anyone know?
