I have already aired my excitement over the new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises in yesterday's blog. However, after searching through more of the summer "must see" films on IGN I came across another film I am excited to see; Ted.
I’m so used to seeing CG used in a dramatic way in action films that I don't really take note of it in regards to the comedy genre, so this was a breath of fresh air. The film follows John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) from an early age with his favourite teddy bear which he wishes would come to life and voila, everyone, meet Ted. As John gets older, so does Ted, and the innocent bear from the age of nine is turned into a brash, rude yet incredibly funny character. Directed by Seth McFarlane, creator of Family Guy, the film promises to have a lot of crude comedy, so be warned.
After looking at the teaser trailer I think the visual effects of Ted look great, with the transformation from toy to “real” being uncanny. I think Ted will embody enough elements to be a hit for both a comedy and CG audience. Tippett Studio and Iloura are both responsible for the CG on this film. These studios have produced effects for films such as the Immortals (I know the film wasn’t great, but you can see an amazing breakdown clip of the CG here), the Twilight films (Tippett Studio), The Bank Job and Ghost Rider (Iloura). For me, this is going to be one of the top comedy films to see this summer, regardless of whether the plot is any good!
Both The Dark Knight Rises and Ted promise to be an amazing indication of what CG can do at completely different ends of the spectrum. If there are any other films I haven’t mentioned please feel free to alert us of its existence!
