I’m a bit of a sucker for anything which delves in to the magical, mystical world of the paranormal. I’m always on the look-out for the slightly darker, more obscure films, something with an edge which sits a bit left of centre and if there is a little bit of ‘reality’ in there, then all the better!
The Last Word is a supernatural horror from 30 Days of Night screenwriter Ben Ketai and, on first read, it seems to tick all the boxes for me (not to be confused with the 2008 rom-com starring Wes Bentley - which ticks a whole other different box!) The film covers the strange and tragic aftermath endured by the participants in the trial of a young man in Texas who was wrongly convicted and executed for the rape and murder of a nun. The thing that really caught my eye is that it is said to be based loosely on actual events, I say ‘loosely’ because co-producer Frank Mancuso Jr. was quoted in comingsoon.net on Monday as saying “’Based on a true story’ has been overused as a marketing ploy however this film will scorch an indelible imprint on those who see it. The powerful words of this dying man will never be forgotten.”
Film District’s CEO Peter Schlessel also had this to say about their decision to get involved: “After hearing about this story and reading Ben’s script, we were compelled to work on this unique project. We’re excited for audiences across the world to be disturbed and fascinated by this bone chilling story.”
The project is set to commence production this summer with plans for domestic release in 2014. So, based on a true story or not, I think this is one to watch out for…
