Digital artist Kelly Richardson recently completed an artist’s residency at the Pixel Palace, a new digital media arts programme of the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle upon Tyne. During her time there, she began initial research and production into an ambitious new three projection video installation entitled ‘Mariner 9’. During her residency, the Pixel Palace commissioned a short film about the work being developed where she explains some of her processes and ideas behind the new installation.
Working alongside Mark Jobe from Quay Animation Studios who she collaborates closely with on all of her work, ‘Mariner 9’ will be completed over the next few months and will premiere during a solo exhibition in Newcastle next summer at the same time as NASA’s latest mission to Mars ‘Curiosity’ is scheduled to land on the Martian surface. The exhibition will also coincide with the first survey show of her video installations at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland which will then go on a national and international tour to a number of venues including the Grundy Art Gallery (Blackpool, UK), Towner (Eastbourne, UK), Albright-Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo, New York, USA) and the Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver, Canada).
