The legend that created the lab process of travelling mattes, (that’s blue/green screens to the rest of us) sadly passed away last week, at the grand age of 96.
Petro Vlahos came with the optical colour separation process to produce mattes from blue screens and eliminating the halo and spill from previous techniques.
Vlahos’ method was used in hundreds of films, including the first Star Wars Trilogy and the Indiana Jones films, interestingly these principles underpin the techniques that are still used in the digital world today
