I love and loathe Math. I refer to myself as a "numerophobe" and a frequent comment can be heard when Math rears its ugly head in my everyday life, "I was told there'd be no Math?" Although I find Math repugnant, I also embrace it, because at heart, I'm a puzzle solver.
My degree was in Medieval and Ancient History, but I have an uncanny knack for numbers. I'm often called upon to be the "spreadsheet queen" on the occasions where one is required (think volunteer organizations, putting together budgets, solving complicated "if/then" scenarios, etc). Math has served me very well in my career in Visual Effects. Without it I couldn't calculate disc space, filmout time, shot counts, budgets and of course VFX artists and Math are close friends.
I believe I've stumbled upon the series to help me come to grips with my complicated relationship with Math. It's Vi Hart's visualization of Math in nature--specifically the Fibonacci series and its presence in plants. After you watch it, you will find Fibonacci numbers EVERYWHERE!! And let's not forget Phi, that Fibonacci series in fractions. Amazing, and very well presented. Part 1 and Part 2 are online, with Part 3 yet to come.
Vi hints at some disharmony in the plant world toward the end of Part 2, I can't wait for Part 3's explanation of the anomalies she's found.
Take a look and tell us what you think.
