If you are an experienced Maya user, you should check out this month’s free tutorial. Escape Studios' instructor, Mark Spevick takes a look at a complex scene setup that can be used to generate more accurate lighting effects using volumetric materials.
He’ll also cover the various Mental Ray shaders, participating media, caustics, photons and render settings used in creating the effect. The process for creating the scene is fairly intricate, and this video will take you through all of the steps, while identifying common mistakes and several ways to speed up your workflow and your render times.
This is a really complex process and not very well documented, but it yields beautiful, realistic results and Mark will guide you through all of the important steps that you might miss otherwise. Be sure to have a pen and notebook handy to take notes for this one. It’s short but dense!
In this 22 minute tutorial, you will learn how to use:
- Decay rate
- Volumetric materials
- Participating media
- transmat and transmat_photon node
- Parti_volume and parti_volume_photon node
- Render feedback
- Photons
- Caustics
