Free Maya Tutorial: Gimbal Lock and Rotation Order

Free Maya Tutorial: Gimbal Lock and Rotation Order

Join Escape Studios’ Training Development Director, Lee Danskin for a free tutorial that takes an in-depth look at Gimbal Lock and Rotation Order.

Through a series of examples, Lee introduces gimbal lock, identifies what causes it and the effect it can have on animation. This tutorial will also help you comprehend the result of using Euler based algorithms over Quaternion.

By grouping the Rotation Order options in the DAG node, we are able to identify the issues in both our initial scene and with a simple biped rig.

In this 11-minute tutorial, you will learn:

  • Gimbal
  • Euler and Quaternion math
  • Grouping
  • Rotation order

Great to see this tad. Hope you are well as always and I'll definitely take a look. I actually use a technique comprised of aim constraints that fakes a quaternion. But I'll definitely look at this. Best,
