First Look at The New Adventures of Tintin

First Look at The New Adventures of Tintin

Could this be the first effective all performance capture movie?

So the first exclusive shots of the new Tintin project have just been released, and although I am not an avid Tintin fan, or Tintinologist as I believe they’re called, there are many reasons to be excited about the young reporter’s leap to the big screen. The first would have to be the pair up of two of Hollywood’s greatest film makers, as Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson take to the helm as joint Director. I think it’s fair to say that we can expect big things from anything linked to these two however, what I’m more excited to see is how they tackle the choice of moving from a live action project to a full CG performance capture piece.

I can certainly understand the decision not to stick with live action, and risk falling into the realms of comic book kitsch, such as Robert Altman’s Popeye adaptation. I’ve never really warmed to performance capture, except when used sparingly and in conjunction with live action shoots and although Avatar’s success was largely down to advances in this area, it still wasn’t technically a completely performance capture film. What are your thoughts on the future of performance capture projects, and these sneak glimpses of Tintin and Captain Haddock? And is Tintin popular enough in the US to be a box office hit, or do you think the film will create a new wave of Tintinologists?

I just hope they do't use Robert Zemeckis' crapformance capture technology. He lives in a castle in The Uncanny Valley...

Funny you should say that Alan, apparently Robert Zemeckis was originally signed up but left the project to sign exclusivity with Disney. I think the performance capture side is all being managed by Weta, and I have to agree, I'm quite glad he's not involved. His previous projects have really put me off the whole medium.

What do you guys think about the cartoony, yet photo-realistic look?
