Last Thursday, Escape Studios launched the UK’s first VFX Festival with an exclusive panel debate made up of the industry’s top flag bearers!
We traipsed down to the House of St. Barnabas in Soho, to listen to an 8 strong panel of the biggest names in the business talk everything VFX.
The panel consisted of Paul Franklin, VFX supervisor at Double Negative, Sir William Sargent, CEO of Framestore, Hector Macleod, CEO of Glassworks, Courtney Vanderslice, Head of Production at Cinesite, and Pat Joseph, COO at The Mill as well as Culture Minister, Ed Vaizey MP, and Samantha Perahia, from the British Film Commission, and was chaired by our very own Dominic Davenport, CEO and founder of Escape Studios,
To get the ball rolling for the festival (taking place from the 10-13th October) this team of assembled experts, (The Avengers of the UK VFX industry, in my eyes anyway!) discussed everything VFX, from the expansion of the industry over the last decade, to the current challenges facing it. Other subjects such as Tax credits, globalization, Christopher Nolan, sustainability, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones were all thrown into the mixer, to make for an hour of intensive discussion that covered all bases.
The debate confirmed VFX as one of the most exciting and progressive industries within Britain - and one that Ed Vaizey (Minister for Culture) sees as a key player for both inward and overseas investment in the UK.
Escape Studios pioneer Dominic Davenport commented “it was fantastic to be sat in one room in Soho with leading talent in the world of VFX and have acknowledgement from the British Film Commission, and Government, of VFX’s crucial role within the film industry. I cannot wait for the festival to begin now and to see this enthusiasm transferred to the next generation of VFX artists.”
The panel debate was indeed just a starter course for the festival on the horizon. The jam packed, expert rich schedule we have prepared will be sure to spread the word of VFX to those unbeknownst of such an exciting industry, and those who have already opened the door to the business will be sure to get their fill of excitement.
