On Thursday last week, our friends from Digital Domain came by to breakdown their work on "Real Steel". The house was packed to capacity, and the Q&A sessions were lively as Erik Gamache, Geoffrey Baumann, Justin van der Lek and Blake Sweeney explained the process behind animation, environments, crowd duplication and lighting.
The team was very excited to share their experience with different renderers, finally settling on V-Ray for the most realistic lighting on the highly reflective robots. Also very interesting (to yours truly) was the story behind the usage of NUKE for crowd duplication. Only 80 extras were shot and then artfully repositioned to create the crowds in the stadium scenes.
We also distributed some very exciting prizes during the evening, and here is a quick summary of the lucky winners:
- Mr Diego Rojas, received an Escape Studios NUKE for 3D Artist online course
- Mr Cuong Quach, received a V-Ray for Maya dongle
- Ms Carmen Castañeda, Mr Justin Wentz and Mr Greg Pilon all won Digital Domain's "Real Steel" crew special merchandise
Many thanks to our friends at Digital Domain, Chaos Group and The Foundry for their efforts in making this event possible. We hope this will be the first of many - stay tuned!
