Rare, one of the Microsoft Game Studios, is now in its third decade and still going from strength to strength. Why it chose to team up with Escape Studios is a testament to both what the former demand and what the latter provide.
The two studios first got together when Rare learnt how Escape could help with providing Maya.
“The best thing about dealing with Escape Studios is that they actually use the tools they sell us, so they know what they are talking about. They give our staff focused training on elements of the software that, as a developer, we would not otherwise have time to investigate,” said Lee Musgrave, Head of Art at Rare.
The giving has been both ways, however, with Rare providing Escape Studios with a large library of assets that is currently being used in its new games course. By working on actual in-game assets from real titles, students graduate and hit the ground running, going straight into Escape Pods and getting real, current industry experience.
“Without backing from industry stalwarts such as Rare, we wouldn’t be able to offer such comprehensive training,” added Dom Davenport, CEO of Escape Studios.
“Using real world examples makes a massive difference to our students, and the quality of work they produce. Plus, with over 100 seats at our headquarters, running Maya, Shake, RenderMan, PFTrack, 3D Equaliser, Silhouette, Turtle and many more, plus the Isilon storage system to complement such a set-up, Escape Studios is perfectly placed not just to provide services, but to advise production facilities of all sizes on the best solution for them.” [Images - Top: Viva Piñata/Rare, Top Right: Kameo/Rare, Bottom Right: Viva Piñata/Rare]
