Escape Studios is the first name in CG training in the UK so it’s unsurprising that it found a kindred spirit in The Moving Picture Company (MPC), a world-leading post production facility creating digital visual effects and animation for the film, advertising, music and television industries.
Since 2005 the two companies have been virtually joined at the hip, enjoying the kind of working relationship that’s led to Escape providing MPC with just about all it needs to maintain its position in the market.
“With regards to what we needed, choosing Escape was something of a no-brainer,” said Nick Cannon, Chief Technical Officer at MPC. “It wasn’t just software or hardware – Escape Studios understand what the industry needs. Everything from licensing to storage to recruitment. It is refreshing to deal with such like-minded people.”
A company like MPC needs software such as Maya, RenderMan, Massive, and 3D Equaliser, and hardware like Boxx workstations and Isilon storage systems for its mammoth production facilities in both film and commercials, and Escape is in a perfect position to cater to all its needs.
But hardware and software isn’t all that Escape provide. The brightest new talent is something that MPC wants to get on side before anyone else, and at Escape it can be found in bucket loads.
Training, recruitment and outsourcing are our specialities, and we know that we’re able to match the kind of skilled and keen young artists that MPC needs by direct placement and by way of the Escape Pods which MPC has recognised as an ideal way to get its projects done. It’s fast and matches MPC’s needs to the talent we can provide on a project by project basis.
The Pods are staffed by recent Escapees, and run from within Escape Studios taking care of essential tasks such as rotoscoping (currently using programmes such as Silhouette and Shake) and 3D camera tracking (PFTrack, 3D Equaliser and Maya Live), freeing up MPC’s in-house production facilities.
So, not only do MPC save on space (the Pods communicate via Sohonet, a connection so fast that they are effectively sitting on MPC’s network) but can also use the Pods as a direct recruitment line – a sort of ‘try before you buy’. [Images - Top: Harry PotterMPC, Right: Sony Bravia/MPC]
