Course Description The course begins with a historical introduction to Pixar's RenderMan, broadly covering the development of RenderMan, its primary capabilities, its use on high-end feature films and how it differs from other renderers on the market. The introduction also covers the RenderMan rendering architecture in sufficient detail to allow users to make sense of the powerful features that RenderMan Studio has to offer. The course continues with an overview of the tools included in the RenderMan Studio package. This is followed with a practical introduction to setting up a scene. This exercise covers the nuts and bolts of the interface and how it is used to access the power of RenderMan from Maya. The practical exercises introduce students to fundamental concepts including: Shaders, Texturing, Lighting, Point-based Global Illumination, RIB Archiving and Bakig. Once the students are familiar with RenderMan Studio's features, the course introduces RenderMan Shading Language (RSL). Practical exercises build up the students' confidence in writing shaders, working from very simple to more complex examples including procedural patterns and shading models. The course ends with an involved practical exercise where the students apply all of the techniques they have learned and solve problems typically encountered on real scenes. By the end of th e course, the students will have sufficient experience and confidence in the basics of RenderMan and Studio to successfully continue exploring and learning beyond the classroom.
