Chris Mulcaster

Environment TD/Junior Modeller & Texture Artist at Cinesite

"You really do need your wits about you to study the 12-week VFX Course because it’s absolutely packed. But you know what, it’s worth it"

Chris Mulcaster has only recently graduated with Escape Studios, but already he’s  notched up an impressive list of credits. From The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Trader, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and John Carter of Mars. Although Chris knew that he wanted to work in the CG industry, he didn’t know which area. But one thing’s for sure, from the moment he watched Terminator 2, he was hooked on film and effects. Full stop.

Get me into the Industry, quickly

After studying at Portsmouth University Chris gained a BA (Hons) in Computer Animation. "I hadn’t really considered working in film and it was only when I saw Dark Knight that I was totally blown away" Chris wanted the most direct route into the industry without having to go back to university and decided to find out about short, hands-on courses. "After lots of research and hearing good things about Escape Studios, the 12-week course was mentioned to me by someone working for WETA in New Zealand while I was travelling. It really got me excited and I quickly decided it was the best way for me to become a VFX artist".

It’s not for the faint-hearted

"The 12-week VFX course was intensive to say the least - it went by quickly and I had to take in a lot in a short amount of time, learning the entire pipeline, while working on the two projects we were given by Escape. Though, if I ever needed help I could always ask the tutors”. But as Chris reminds us, it didn’t happen overnight – he had to make sure he put the effort in to reap the rewards afterwards. Chris worked hard for four months after the course finished using the skills he’d learned to get his showreel in shape to start applying for jobs. “It was great because we were allowed back to Escape in the evenings quite regularly to get any help we needed and use as many of the machines to render our work!"

Chris also told us that the Recruitment Team were great, giving him feedback on his showreel and explaining what needed to be done before he could start applying for jobs. "It was great to have experienced advisors on hand whenever I needed it - and now look where I am, at Cinesite. All worked out pretty well really, didn’t it?".

We couldn't have put it better ourselves.
