VFX and the Awards Season: Time for those Visual Effects Society Nominations!

With VFX heavy films receiving a huge amount of positive reception in the 86th Academy Awards nomination lists, we’re seeing more people than ever with a keen eye on the 12th Annual Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards nominees. The leading titles recently announced are 'Gravity', 'Frozen', 'The Croods' and 'Game of Thrones', and the question on which of these is going to scoop up the most awards is creating quite a buzz around here.

CVMP 2012 - Reflections (and Refractions)...Part One!

This was the 9th iteration of the CVMP conference, and it certainly lived up to its billing. The conference struck just the right balance between academic research and commercial production, providing a hugely rich and diverse array of ideas, challenges, successes and future endeavours.

A Modern Soundtrack for a Restored Classic!

A Modern Soundtrack for a Restored Classic!

Last weekend I stumbled across an album cover with the VES (Visual Effects Society) logo on it. For those of you who don’t know, the current logo for the VES is the iconic image of the moon from the film Le Voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon), a 16 minute black and white silent film from 1902. It was a revolutionary film for its time, being not only the first sci-fi but also using special effects that were very high tech at the turn of the century. Though the film was distributed predominately in black and white there was also a hand-coloured version that was thought to be lost for quite some time until the only surviving print was found in Spain in 1993.
