I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - the role of an artist is a complex and often challenging one. Every artist, no matter what stage you’re at in your career, will struggle with diminishing motivation and inspiration. It’s incredibly easy to slip into this state as we work ourselves into the ground, letting the pot of ideas run empty. But you are not alone! I know this because last week I spent three days at Reasons to be Creative in Brighton and was surrounded by artists and developers from across the creative industries, all looking for a fix of something that would get their creative juices flowing…
Here at Escape, we're always trying to help our Escapees get the best jobs in the VFX industry, as part of our ongoing commitment to every student who passes through our doors. Sometimes that means they'll work on feature films, or hit TV shows, or sometimes, as Roberto Fera was lucky enough to find out, it means music videos.
I hope you've slept well, Internet! It's been too long since we spoke. Shall we get a coffee and catch up?
Folks, it's Friday, so it's time for a bit of Friday Fun, and who better to deliver it than your good friend Ash? No one! That's who!
Happy Friday everyone! May the woo be with you. There's a good vibe in the office this morning as we sail towards August bank holiday; the sun is shining, birds are swaying, trees are singing. I might even go for a walk later.
One of the highlights of studying at Escape Studios is of course its fantastic location in the heart of West London's Shepherd's Bush. Being just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away from the tube, the train and all manner of buses means Students have easy access to Central London (including the VFX hub of Soho) as well as other famous London hotspots including Oxford Circus and Notting Hill.
Star Wars Episode VII is on the horizon, and whether you are jumping in the air with excitement or recoiling every time the film's title is uttered – the creation of the motion picture is going to be one interesting venture.
Fan favourite film mag Empire recently released a list of cinema's greatest VFX shots as picked by industry experts and it certainly hit all the right notes. Classic scenes from Jurassic Park, Star Wars and The Abyss were all on there, but we were particularly proud to see number 1 being Davy Jones' face from POTC:DMC, which our very own Head of 2D and tutor Davi Stein worked on during her time at ILM! Congratulations Davi!
It’s been a sweltering couple of weeks, and in the UK, it’s a well-known fact that we love to talk about the weather, what kind of London based establishment would we be if we didn’t blog about it?
When it comes to VFX, Compositors are the masters of make-believe. They're the magicians who create the illusion of reality in every CG shot. They can look at a shot and tell you exactly what's wrong with it and the best way to correct it. In essence, they are true artists with an eye for beauty and their devotion to it means we get to watch something stunning every time.
For those of you out there who use MARI, some fantastic new additions to its functionality are now available for download and I highly recommend them!
Last week we were joined by Junior Lighting TD and Escape graduate Alastair Cross for a webinar that shows another side to VFX. The Hollywood side of VFX is probably why most of us want to work in the CG industry, but CG artists are putting their skills and knowledge to good use in lots of different areas. If you missed this webinar, the great news is we recorded it and the recording is now available to watch on our YouTube channel.
How to get into and survive Film, Advertising and TV post-production is topping the charts on free Kindle downloads, out-doing Star Wars. Pretty epic! If this tells us anything, it’s that there are still a healthy number of talented people looking to break into the post side of production. The author of this very popular book is none other than Klaudija Cermak, a compositing tutor who previously taught here at Escape Studios, and she certainly knows her stuff!
