What's up folks? If you were at the VFX Festival, you may have seen me, sitting at the back of every talk, splitting my time between attentively heeding every word spoken by our expert speakers, and tapping away on a tablet screen. If you didn't make the Festival then you no doubt would've een the result of my incessant tapping in the form of Tweets and Instagram posts, I hope said posts did indeed convey how absolutely killer those three days really were. It'd be impossible for me to cover everything I saw in a mere blog post, so here's a highlight or two from day one that I'm sure will paint a picture for those who couldn't make it...
On Friday 5 December, we visited Aardman Animations to celebrate the graduation of 11 students on a 12-week Character Animation course. Now in it’s second year, the course in a collaboration between NFTS, Creative Skillset and Aardman. The mission? The provide animation training that is industry focused and addresses the skills gap for animators in the UK. And from what we saw on Friday, this is just our kind of animation course - the kind where students are supported in realising their career ambition, towards getting a job after they graduate.
If you’re in the business of creative careers, then it’s likely you’ll be aware of Creative Skillset, an organisation that aims to plug skills gaps, identify funding needs, and train, develop and nurture people within creative industries.
This time of year tends to be a busy time for VFX, particularly for Compositing departments, with film production schedules nearing the end of their pipeline, and VFX teams working towards looming delivery deadlines. During this busy time, it’s great to see our graduates benefitting from the industry’s demand for more experienced Compositors. This is certainly the case for Jacopo Landi who graduated from our Advanced Compositing for VFX course last March and is now working at Double Negative as a Digital Stereo Compositor.

Written on the back of an encounter between California’s Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom (who also sits on the boards of the University of California and California State University systems) and brand new start up education company ‘Udacity’, an organisation that creates online college courses focused largely on science and technology.
Often for a VFX artist there is a defining moment of clarity, whether it be during a TV program, an epic film, or just viewing a highly detailed drawing, most of the artists we encounter, when asked “what made you want to become a VFX artist?” Usually one of these occasions is cited as a reply.

We’ve been brewing up a VFX storm over the last few weeks in the form of the VFX Festival 2013. Last year’s Festival was a huge success, tickets sold out in 72 hours and after a week of packed workshops and talks, this time we had no choice but to make things bigger and better!
As someone who has close, personal experience of Autism through my son, I can see some really interesting technology being developed using Google Glass as a route into the puzzling world of understanding other people.
Don’t you just love it when two intricate art forms collide to make something equally as wonderful as each ingredient on its own? We saw this video (above) created by students from the University for the Creative Arts, and not only did we fall in love with the computer generated imagery, but we were impressed by the fact that this animation was synchronised with a live recording of Milhaud’s 'La Création du Monde'.
