From Past To Present

From Past To Present

It’s always interesting to see how different studios rank, whether it’s in regards to gaming, films or television. On Wednesday, Develop Online released its top 100 best studios, which, let’s be honest is always good to have a nose at. This time, however, what made it more interesting for us is the fact that two escapees have gone on to work for the number one voted UK game’s developer, Traveller’s Tales!

E3, On The Flip Side

E3, On The Flip Side

As shown in this real time tech demo by Epic Games Unreal Engine 4, there are a host of improvements coming to the next generation of console and PC games. These are notably, real time dynamic lighting and particle effects as well as massive improvements to the UDK itself, enabling developers to leverage all these improvements much easier and faster. Then, just to show off Square-Enix, creaters of the hugely popular Final Fanstasy series, go and show what their latest real time tech is made of, and that really is impressive.

Escapee Showreel - Ewan Armstrong

Escapee Showreel - Ewan Armstrong

Having previously worked in the games industry and studied Computer Games Art at degree level, Ewan Armstrong wanted to broaden his skill set to make the transition into film and TV media. Ewan made the decision to study at Escape because he saw an opportunity to fill the gaps in his knowledge on production rendering techniques, camera tracking and compositing, all while being in an environment closely linked to the VFX industry.

Has E3 Spelt the End of VFX? Possibly Not!

Has E3 Spelt the End of VFX? Possibly Not!

I was on holiday last week, enjoying the almost total lack of sun, and having a week long geekasm at the E3 coverage. Imagine my surprise, then, to come back to work at Escape to discover hardly a mention of all that awesomeness on the blog. This is not, I thought to myself, acceptable. So have a peek at this!

Valve Show Us How It's Done, Again

Valve Show Us How It's Done, Again

Once again, I’m going to have to promote how great a developer Valve is by showing you another presentation that I found on their website. I know I have already showcased some of their expertise in a post a couple of days ago but I think this presentation is equally as impressive as the last one.

Valve Show Us How It's Done

Valve Show Us How It's Done

If you're anything like me, you'll have a favourite developer, and mine just happens to be Valve. For those of you who don’t know Valve, it's an entertainment software and technology company that has been around since 1996. Since its beginning, it has produced an overwhelming amount of award winning games, with the most recent including Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Portal 1 & 2, Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike. It is also the developer of leading-edge technologies including game engine Source, and premier online gaming platform Steam.

Golden Oldies VS Shiny Newbies

Golden Oldies VS Shiny Newbies

The other day I was searching for an online "time waster" game during my journey home. I don’t like signing up to free gaming websites so I was thrilled to see that the old classic Snake was free to play online. For those of you who don’t know (rare, but they’re out there) Snake was a game that featured on the old Nokia phones, back in the day when phones were used for texts and calls only.

Isn't It Marvel-lous?

We just can’t get enough of Marvel at the moment. And they are back again with one of the most popular characters coming back to the big screen, The Amazing Spider-Man.

This film has Andrew Garfield of The Social Network fame, starring as Peter Parker in an untold story that presents us with a different version of Spider-Man. It is due in cinemas from July 3rd, but you probably knew that already.
