Pixel Palace Artist in Residence: Kelly Richardson

Digital artist Kelly Richardson recently completed an artist’s residency at the Pixel Palace, a new digital media arts programme of the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle upon Tyne. During her time there, she began initial research and production into an ambitious new three projection video installation entitled ‘Mariner 9’. During her residency, the Pixel Palace commissioned a short film about the work being developed where she explains some of her processes and ideas behind the new installation.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

There is a VFX buzz coming from Barcelona and it's due to Big Lazy Robot. Their stand out piece for the Phillips TV Parallel Lines Cinema campaign based around 'The Unicorn' was The Gift - and every time I watch, it keeps giving more.

Tweak Software Release RV 3.12.13

Tweak are working hard to develop and expand their powerful playback software, RV-image and sequence viewer. Their latest development comes in the form of RV 3.12.13. With this new version you get all the usual benefits of real time reviewing software, but now with the additional support of Python to make this version the most powerful yet. This new addition to the product has been in beta for a while now, and has benefitted from extensive feedback from customers reporting rough edges and bugs. With this valuable knowledge behind them Tweak are happy to release RV with Python, confident that the results will impress all.

What’s in Your TV 'Must Watch List' This Xmas?

What’s in Your TV 'Must Watch List' This Xmas?

It’s about this time of year when I actually start getting quite excited about watching TV. I know it sounds quite sad, but I don’t get that much spare time to watch the box normally. Xmas is THE time when I indulge my secret passion for children’s tales and magical stories. The child in me is reawakened every year during that time, when I barely move out of the house – or off the sofa!

The Illusionist: Beautiful Animation but is it Faithful to Tati?

The Illusionist: Beautiful Animation but is it Faithful to Tati?

I love Sunday. It’s my favourite day of the week: a day when I can 'veg out' and watch all the stuff on TV I don’t normally have time for. Yesterday, I settled down to watch a feature animation which had been on my ‘To Watch’ list for some time. It’s called “The Illusionist” and is a Franco-British collaboration, directed by Sylvain Chomet.

A Francophile's Take on Tintin

A Francophile's Take on Tintin

I went to see Tintin in 3D a few days ago - in itself, there's nothing unique about that, but I am both a Francophile living in England and a die-hard fan of Tintin, so I thought I would write my views about this new take on my childhood hero.

Davi Stein Goes to VES Screening of Captain America

Davi Stein Goes to VES Screening of Captain America

I had the priviledge to see a VES (Visual Effects Society) screening of the film "Captain America: The First Avenger" a few weeks ago, which was held at Framestore. Afterwards Framestore and Double Negative talked a bit about their involvement on some effects shots.

The Adventures of Tintin: A New Dawn for Cinema

The Adventures of Tintin: A New Dawn for Cinema

I must admit that I had read too many negative reviews about 3D cinema's second coming, to risk the disappointment of ruining my night at the movies. I now bitterly regret doubting James Cameron by seeing Avatar on the small screen, but I had to break this cycle of negativity sooner or later, and figured the dream team of Spielberg, Jackson and Hergé would be a smart bet. After all, if these masters of cinematography and story telling could not deliver - then no one could do.
