Happy New Year folks, hope you all got the things you wanted for Christmas. I certainly did; that pony was a long time coming. Remember autumn? The pavements littered with fallen leaves? Consider yourself in the shoes of Spanish artist Lorenzo Duran Silva, in his eyes these fallen autumn leaves are thousands of potential canvases.
Inspired by once watching a caterpillar eating a leaf, Silva takes fallen leaves, washes, dries and presses them before etching intricate pieces of art onto them, creating some outstanding images.
The process can take anything from a week to two months to complete, and this artist has spent 4 years making these creations, boy has he mastered his craft! Be sure to check out this site and see some truly compelling works of art.
Many 3D fans will be aware of the power of Maya, and the influence it has on the world of VFX, from blockbuster films to major games series, Maya is one of the most incredible creative tools on the planet. But like a pack of Arctic Huskies, it demands time and attention if you wish it to take you voyaging across the vast plains of 3D.

Some good news for VFX fans this week, as VES announce that a complete documentary film about the legendary Ray Harryhausen, will be shown at a number of festivals early next year, and better still, those who can’t make these screenings, will be able to get their hands on ‘RAY HARRYHAUSEN: SPECIAL EFFECTS TITAN’ (quite the title, eh?) as soon as March 2013.
Being an avid Harryhausen fan, I own a signed copy of his classic book ‘The Art of Ray Harryhausen’, and have had the great pleasure of attending an intimate lecture held by this ‘Special Effects Titan’ back in 2009.
The VFX industry has emerged to become the most fervent, vibrant and limitless creative platforms of the 21st century, and has created a world where, equipped with the right skills and determination, the phrase ‘the sky is the limit’ is rarely an understatement.
We spoke to our friends over at Prime Focus World last month, in conjunction with their completed work on the stereo conversion of Tim Burton’s stop motion comedy horror - Frankenweenie. PFW worked closely and moreover, exclusively, with Disney and Burton on the picture, and the opportunity to chat about the project was just too good to miss!

Another month and a half has flown by, and this afternoon we hosted the end-of-course presentation for our latest round of escapees. Gathered in our breakout space, the afternoon has been filled with laughter and applause. The quality of work on show has been, as ever, astonishing—it never ceases to amaze just how far our students progress in such a short period of time; and we feel confident these bright young things now stand in good stead to polish up those all-important industry-cracking showreels.
Having just started the VFX for Production course here at Escape Studios, I've been keeping a diary to share how the course is going for me so far. And here's an update on week two. The class is truly in full swing, and when it came to writing my diary, it seemed to be over before I knew it had started. Time flies when you're having fun!
