For those of you considering working in this thriving, dynamic industry, we’re offering a taster into the world of computer graphics with a range of three-day short courses. They’re a great opportunity to get a better understanding of the career opportunities out there while gaining valuable insight into the industry.
The four new taster courses available are: Introduction to 3D using Maya (the leading 3D imaging software), Introduction to Computer Animation, Introduction to Visual Effects and Introduction to Games. They all contain abbreviated content from Escape Studios’ full-time courses and will give you the chance to learn the basics of 3D effects creation while gaining a better understanding of what’s involved in visual effects, character animation and games art with guidance from world-class tutors.
All four short courses cost £399 each, which will be refunded if you sign up to one of our classroom courses – these are typically 12 weeks long and are designed to arm you with the required skills to start your career. We offer a range of courses, so for more information check out the site or speak to our training team.
You might have read that we recently surveyed people working in the industry for their thoughts about their jobs and the world they work in. We’ve now taken this one step further by asking graduates about their expectations of a career in this field.
One of the great things we found was that CG graduates are pretty realistic – the working hours don’t seem to put them off and the salary is not a deciding factor for those hoping to enter the industry (doing something they love is far more important).
This is good to see as CG students currently have strong employment opportunities within the industry. You may have heard that the FDA has said UK box offices are set to take in £1billion this year and with 3D cinemas showing big-ticket blockbuster movies, including today’s release of Avatar, the CG industry needs to produce top-notch talent more then ever before.
It’s so encouraging to hear that new CG graduates bear realistic expectations of what it’s like to work in the industry and still want to pursue training and employment opportunities. Graduates are pretty clued up and place great importance around career fulfillment – which is good news. CG is one area where the UK really does lead the world and a constant flow of new talent will ensure this continues to be the case.
Congratulations to all the finalists of our CG Whiz competition. We had a great time at the Reveal Event last night, meeting the future stars of the CG industry. As we’ve said before, we were overwhelmed by the sheer number and quality of the entries we’ve received.
It’s clear that there’s a lot of talent out there, but there could only be one winner – Adam Droy (spikeycactus)!

Adam excelled across the board. His showreel highlighted his creative flair whilst demonstrating a sound understanding of the techniques involved. We’re very much looking forward to Adam studying with us at Escape next year, and wish him the best of luck during his work placement at The Mill.
The two runners up should also be commended, having fought off stiff competition from over 130 entrants.
Ronan McMeel’s (MrMeel) showreel earned him the runners up position, impressing the judges with his creativity and incorporating a storyline throughout his work.

Marco Baratto (smileandwave1987) also wowed the judges with a technically sound showreel – inspired by the “HP Hand” commercial.

Ronan and Marco – we hope you enjoy Escape Studios’ online courses and exclusive tour of The Mill.
For those of you that missed out this year, or didn’t get around to entering, don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for information on next year’s competition. You’ll hear about it here first.
Today marks the beginning of Autodesk’s 3December – an annual event, celebrating 3D computer graphics and the artists who create them.
Traditionally a live event, this year’s event takes place virtually online and features a master class from Liquid Development’s creative team on developing assets for “Rock Band: The Beatles”. By registering you can see top industry talent, learn from the pros and network with other professionals as well as have access to tutorials, Autodesk Masters and masterclasses. On-line activities run from Dec. 1-10, uniting thousands of artists across three continents – check out more info here http://area.autodesk.com/3dec.
