A Cube Made Out of Gears

A Cube Made Out of Gears

Sometimes, you just come across something which simplify defies logic and the laws of physics... Today, I did just that when I discovered this incredible piece of 3D printing. It just goes to show the magic you can create with such technology. And if you fancy trying to build something like that yourself, here is where you can find some instructions.

Amazing Realistic Paintings of Children’s Drawings

Amazing Realistic Paintings of Children’s Drawings

An old colleague of mine (thanks Miles!) recently posted this link on his Google+ profile and I was instantly mesmerised. Illustrator Dave DeVries has had the amazing idea of taking children’s drawings and representing them as ‘realistic’ paintings in a project called “The Monster Engine”. The results are absolutely amazing. The artist describes his initiative as “a book, a demonstration, lecture and a gallery exhibition. The premise for all three came from one single question: What would a child’s drawing look like if it were painted realistically?”

The Votes Have Been Cast And The Results Are In…

The judging is done, and the votes are in – the winners for CG Whiz 2011 have been decided upon, but you’ll have to wait until the 14th December to find out who the winner are. I know, it's a bit cruel, but we like to make a big deal of our Reveal Event. It's only fair considering how much work all our entrants have put in to their reels.

What’s in Your TV 'Must Watch List' This Xmas?

What’s in Your TV 'Must Watch List' This Xmas?

It’s about this time of year when I actually start getting quite excited about watching TV. I know it sounds quite sad, but I don’t get that much spare time to watch the box normally. Xmas is THE time when I indulge my secret passion for children’s tales and magical stories. The child in me is reawakened every year during that time, when I barely move out of the house – or off the sofa!

Dreamworks Animation Fills Their Boots

Dreamworks Animation Fills Their Boots

As Puss in Boots sets Box Office records in the US, we were very keen to watch a special preview screened by Paramount Pictures at the BFI Southbank on Sunday afternoon, to judge if the film lives up to the surrounding hype, and we weren’t disappointed.

BallAHolic: How to Make an Innovative 3D iPhone Game

I stumbled across a very cool iPhone game and loved how it felt, played and looked. I did some research and managed to get one of the team to write this blog post! Here is what Christian Buettner, from A Local Chaos Project, had to say about their creation:

3D Consumer Apps From Autodesk

3D Consumer Apps From Autodesk

Autodesk are making a serious play for the consumer world, with their new 123D range of applications. Some time ago they came up with the 123D Cad and Make software aimed at people who wish to make models and get them produced via 3D printing and laser cutting shops. Though it held much appeal for students and hobbyists, its real target is small businesses.

MARI vs. Photoshop Webinar Now Available to Watch Online

MARI vs. Photoshop Webinar Now Available to Watch Online

The MARI vs. Photoshop webinar held on November 2nd 2011 was hugely successful. Registrations were record breaking and there was an encouraging attendance on the day. For what is becoming a popular topic at the moment, The Foundry are certainly paving the way for the future of compositing pipelines with products like NUKE and MARI.

A Francophile's Take on Tintin

A Francophile's Take on Tintin

I went to see Tintin in 3D a few days ago - in itself, there's nothing unique about that, but I am both a Francophile living in England and a die-hard fan of Tintin, so I thought I would write my views about this new take on my childhood hero.

November Free Tutorial: Animate a Bird & Make it Fly (Part 1)

November Free Tutorial: Animate a Bird & Make it Fly (Part 1)

When I created this tutorial, my number one objective was to ensure that whoever was learning could really use what they create and incorporate it into something that they might already be working on. That’s why this animation tutorial is so substantial and has been separated into two parts! This month, we will use a pre-created rig, which you can buy here and use to explore the mechanics of bird locomation. It costs just $5 and trust me, it’s worth it.
