Who says you can't create in Microsoft Paint?

Who says you can't create in Microsoft Paint?

There was always one kid in school who, when it came to using computers - was a wizard with the mouse, and would create pictures on ‘Paint’ as soon as your Business Studies teacher had his back turned. Well, some school out there was graced with the presence of this chap ‘Jim’.

This rather charismatic chap called Barry has made his very own diorama model of the battle sequence on ice planet Hoth, from the Empire Strikes Back.

Delving into the Imaginarium that is... Life of Pi

For those of you who have read this novel you have probably already conjured up your own vibrant images from deep within your own imagination - for those who haven't I would recommend reading it. However by the sound of things in a review I found, it sounds as though the legendary Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain) has taken the hard work out of it - painting an incredible living, breathing picture.

Prime Focus World on "3D'ing" Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie'.

We spoke to our friends over at Prime Focus World last month, in conjunction with their completed work on the stereo conversion of Tim Burton’s stop motion comedy horror - Frankenweenie. PFW worked closely and moreover, exclusively, with Disney and Burton on the picture, and the opportunity to chat about the project was just too good to miss!

Second dose of Sin City on the way!

Second dose of Sin City on the way!

So aside from the other movie news that can, for the next couple of hours at least, remain in a galaxy far far away, there is an excellent cinematic prospect around the corner, as it surfaced online this week that the Sin City sequel has started shooting. It appears there is still some casting to be done though…

“City of Possibilities” A stunning commercial from The Mill

The Mill recently completed a commercial for US client Norfolk Southern, showcasing the transformative power of freight shipping. Being a rather stunning piece of work, you may be interested to know that this project was rendered primarily using Mental Ray, taking advantage of the newish unified sampling feature.

VFX for Production Course… 8 Weeks In!

VFX for Production Course… 8 Weeks In!

As a design graduate with 7 years’ experience working within design departments in architecture and retail I spent what time I could learning how to model and animate to create short sequences influenced mainly by films I like. Although fun, learning that way means progress is very slow as is the rate of improvement - at least in my case anyway. I wanted to get better quicker and that's why I signed up for the VFX Production course.

Expand your view of the sky!

Expand your view of the sky!

For Years I've been fascinated by space, as a VFX artist it's the closest thing we have to observing epic film effects in real life. Every star, nebula or galaxy represents incredible pyrotechnics happening right in front of our eyes… albeit a few million years late some of the time. As an example, this is a picture I took a few years ago of M27, also known as the ‘dumbbell nebula’. This is the result of a supernova, a gigantic explosion in space - throwing off matter, the red stuff is mostly hydrogen gas, the greenish stuff is oxygen.

Prime Focus World – Dredd 3D

Prime Focus World – Dredd 3D

Prime Focus World is the VFX house behind another big box office success, delivering 650 stereo VFX shots for “Dredd” in 3D. To put that into perspective for you, that’s 90% of the VFX for the entire movie. What’s more, this was achieved over a 24-week production period. A massive achievement on an epic scale!

Looper – the next Matrix flick?

Looper – the next Matrix flick?

Described as ‘this decades The Matrix, the phrase alone has already set very high standards for it’s audience.  Possibly a bold statement to make, The Matrix was pretty groundbreaking for it’s time. At first glance, the statement seems a cheap marketing gimmick, and one with little to support it. But if ever a marketing gimmick was doing it’s job right, it is now… because it definitely grabbed my attention and intrigued me enough to find out more about the film.

A colleague sent me this fascinating and informative article earlier today, after a discussion about architecture.  Upon opening it, I realised there was a whole branch of the discipline I had overlooked: Zombie Proof Architecture.
