The games industry hogged the spotlight at this year’s SIGGRAPH. For the first time ever, two social games ran throughout the conference and SIGGRAPH’s annual CG showcase was spiced up with live games art and animation demos.

I have been travelling around the UK countryside visiting academic institutions over the past six months. I have made many observations during that time, and feel it is time to share some of them.

When Edge magazine came along to talk to founder of Escape Studios, Dominic Davenport, Recruitment Director Paul Wilkes and Games tutor Simon Fenton, what one thing did they all agree on? That, becoming a games artist has never been trickier without the right training. You can read the full article in the June issue of Edge magazine...
The first trailer for the upcoming Disney Feature The Princess and the Frog has just been released. It heralds a return to the hand drawn traditional animation that Disney is famous for. I for one am excited to see it and hope that it heralds the rebirth of traditional animation as a whole.
I watched Dreamworks newest animation feature, "Monsters vs Aliens" recently and found it to be both truly amazing and really bad. Some bits of animation were brilliant, funny and a joy to watch (such as the cracking the computer code dance scene), while others were disappointing (like the General's entrance and a lot of his dialogue). I felt that the story was just above average. Not bad and not brilliant.

At the moment, the trumpet to blow seems to be that film and games production are converging. If you believe the hype, we'll be in some sort of nirvana where we all use the same approaches etc to the art of making both.
Apple have made quite a few modifications to their machines lately. Firstly, they've brought back the Quadro. Only this time it’s not the 5600 but the 4800. The only snag with this is that it's a bespoke model, and doesn’t include the 30-bit capability of the PC equivalent cards. Essentially, it is down to the fact that Apple machines require an EFI BIOS from add-in cards, and cannot manage a legacy firmware that is typical of the PC ranges.
After working for 7 years as a DVD Technology Developer and Producer I felt it was time to make a change in my life and chase an idea which had been in the back of my head for sometime, to work on blockbuster movies. After many international phone calls and many, many hours of reseach I decided to leave a very well paid job back in Australia and booked a plane ticket to London, Destination; Escape Studios.
