Afonso Salcedo
Afonso Salcedo joined Pixar Animation Studios in January 2005 as an intern in the Rendering department for the Golden Globe®-winning feature, Cars, he then went on to become a full-time lighting artist on the Academy Award®-winning films Ratatouille, WALL•E and Up. Salcedo most recently completed work on the universally acclaimed movie Toy Story 3.
As a lighting artist, Salcedo works on a team of 30-40 other artists and is responsible for picking up shots along the production schedule and working with the base lighting set-up built by the master lighter. He works to create the final look and mood of the image, which involves everything from creating shadows, reflections, lights and give the shot exactly what it needs to create the mood and atmosphere the Director of Photography and the Director are going for.
Prior to joining Pixar, Salcedo worked at Framestore in London, England on various film projects. His lifelong passion for films and his love for photography led him to seek a profession in visual effects and cinematography. Salcedo feels he has found the best of both worlds at Pixar.
Born in the Bay Area but raised in Portugal, Salcedo moved to the UK when he was 18 years old. There he completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in Computer Science. After living and working in the UK for 6 years, he moved to the U.S. He currently resides in San Francisco.
