Nice to see our friends at Rhythm & Hues getting such great coverage in this Animation Magazine article.
How The Third Floor helped to shape "The Avengers"
Ever wonder what the difference is between previs, techvis, and postvis? This article goes through each step in the process as put together by our friends at The Third Floor, who were involved even at the storyboard level on the blockbuster "The Avengers". The team there were able to work closely with Director Joss Whedon and VFX Supervisor Janek Sirrs on all aspects of the film.

Summer blockbusters mean work for VFX
It's summertime, and that means loads of new movies in the theaters. This LA Times article outlines what we all know - great movies contain great visual effects! And they cost money to make.
A Sense of Scale
A big head's up to our friends in the UK office - You have to go see this movie! It premieres at the Sci-Fi London Festival on May 6th and according to the website, 50% of tickets are sold!
Rear Window Timelapse
How do you take an old chestnet and make it new again? You put together a timelapse based on actual footage and stitch it together in After Effects to tell the story of "Rear Window" in a single pane. Welcome to Jeff Desom's world - this appears to be the only thing like this he's done. Part Editorial, part Compositing, part Projection, this 2 minute piece tells the story from the window's POV very nicely.
Great work from Escapees in the UK
Our friend Joe Kelly has gone back to the UK, and is currently working at Escape in London. We miss him! He is still close to our hearts, and he keeps us informed as to the 'haps across the pond. Just yesterday he sent us some gorgeous work done by Escapees at the end of week 6, the Maya Core portion of the VFX Production courses currently finishing up in London. Feast your eyes!
James Cameron and the Mariana Trench
What do Avatar and the health of our oceans have in common? Why, James Cameron, of course!

They actually beat themselves out of the award, as well as others (they were also nominated for Norton "Stuff"). You can read some making-of information here - just click the "details" tab.
Well done, Psyop!

The 3 Commandments: Present Thyself
When people want to start a new career, time and time again the age old question asked is – how do I get started when I have no experience? The answer to this question can be addressed under three main topics, which we refer to raffishly as:
The 3 Commandments: Know Thyself
As our Fall 2011 courses come to a conclusion, I find that I spend much of my time having one-on-one meetings with our soon-to-be graduates, discussing the "after" part of our curriculum.

Susan's Mashup February 3, 2012
Super Bowl approaches – do you have your snacks at the ready? Have you chosen your team? More importantly, have you set your DVR to record the commercials?
This week’s mashup consists of some Super Bowl sneak peeks – we have a “Twilight”-like tailgating party for Audi courtesy of The Mill, takes 2 and 3 for VW and the “Star Wars” enterprise involving Man’s Best Friend, a couple of car spots steeped in fantasy complete with bikini-clad extras, the Coca-Cola polar bears (Giants v. Patriots) up their game and “The Avengers” trailer.
I remember when you actually had to wait for Game Day to see the spots!
This year’s previews are kind of light on VFX - I suspect everyone’s still rendering.
Let us know which ones you liked – and we hope your team wins!
Escape Students Visit New Deal Studios
As part of their classroom course with us, our students (who we affectionately refer to as escapees), get a chance to visit working studios to get a taste of what they will be faced with when they start working in the VFX industry. We took our first bunch of escapees to New Deal studios last week, and rather than giving you my thoughts on how the visit went, I asked Greg Pilon - who is taking our Compositing for Production course - to give us a quick summary of his visit.
Susan's Weekly News Mashup: Sunday Jan 22
Hello again! It’s mashup time! This week’s goodies include some nice spots from our Advisory Board members over at Psyop, some behind-the-scenes with Fincher, a history of Lucas’ latest (well, it turns out, not-so-latest, just lately completed), a great “rise from the ashes” story, a Keanu Reeves documentary of analog v. digital filmmaking, a great interview with Terry Gilliam, Wes Anderson’s newest trailer, a look at the year in VFX and a reel breakdown for “Hugo”. Did we miss anything? As always, we welcome your feedback and comments.
Susan's Weekly News Mashup: Friday 13 Jan 2012
Here is a mashup of news for this week – there’s a cry for old school technology, a list of tips for you to be better prepared for dailies, a couple of reports from CES, a fun commercial for Mini Coopers based on a fan suggestion, a great trailer from Blur, and a rendition of a Dr Seuss story as told by those who attended Burning Man last year.
What’d I miss?
Math, Doodles & the Fibonacci "Conspiracy"
I love and loathe Math. I refer to myself as a "numerophobe" and a frequent comment can be heard when Math rears its ugly head in my everyday life, "I was told there'd be no Math?" Although I find Math repugnant, I also embrace it, because at heart, I'm a puzzle solver.
Susan's Weekly News Mashup: Saturday 7 Jan 2012
Happy New Year! It’s a new year and a new mash-up. This week’s catch contains loads of info about US VFX Companies and their tax breaks, expansions, how to buy a camera, a plea for better treatment for the “Real” Wizards of Oz and more. What’s I miss?
VFX Bake-off Short List Announced
The Academy met last night to cull the list of films in the running for a Visual Effects Oscar nomination to a mere ten. The list is below, in alphabetical order.
Sci-Fi Movies Galore in 2012
The end of the year is generally a time to wax nostalgic about good, bad, indifferent things that happened in the previous 12 months. It's wonderful to acknowledge where we've been, but even more fun to think about where we're going to go! I read with delighted interest io9's overview (with handy calendar!) of Science Fiction/Fantasy movies for 2012.
Susan's Weekly News Mashup: Sunday 18 Dec 2011
A bit late today, but heck, better late than never. Here is my mash-up for the week. Next week’s will be the last of the year! I would love to hear from you if you have something unusual or interesting to share. Have a great weekend!

Susan's Weekly News Mashup: Friday 9 Dec 2011
Hello! And welcome to Friday. Did this week feel short or what?
Keloid Trailer - A Short Film by BLR
In this trailer for "Keloid", BLR offers a very grim view of our future - an AI experiment contained by one man. Will that man let the experiment loose and undermine mankind? The 2:00 trailer is very nicely done - yes, the content looks familiar, but the overall look of the piece has me intrigued. I look forward to seeing the finished product!
Rodeo FX Video Clips from the Making of the Three Musketeers Worth a Watch
Rodeo FX is a company in Montreal that specializes in Matte Paintings, Set Extensions and Compositing. When one usually thinks of matte paintings, one brings to mind the 'way ' background images with no parallax shift - banks of clouds, buildings and other set dressings to make an otherwise anachronistic foreground comply with the period in question. But these matte paintings are extraordinary in that they are 3D in lots of ways - not only were they created in stereo, but they are also fully CG with proper perspective shifts, nice integrative lighting and historically correct.
Susan's Weekly News Mashup: Friday 2 Dec 2011
Another week has gone by – I sat out last week due to the holiday, but here, for your reading pleasure is a mashup of the good, the bad and the absurd. I hope you find some interesting reading within!
Interview About Tower Heist Reads Like a “Tell All” for CG Enthusiasts
I haven't seen "Tower Heist" yet, but I did read with interest this interview with former CIS colleague Greg Liegey about some of the tricks the team had to pull together for a believable finished product.
Susan's Weekly News Mashup: Friday 18 Nov 2011
And here it is, Friday again. I found some pretty cool stuff – not all strictly VFX-related but very groovy nonetheless. I hope you enjoy following these links!
10th Annual VES Awards Are Coming Soon!
February 7, 2011 marks the 10th annual VES Awards ceremony. I always look forward to the Awards Ceremonies - an opportunity to get all dolled up and fête my visual effects colleagues in a manner most worthy of their efforts.
Dream Quest VFX Reel 1980 - 1984
Turn on your 'way back machine' and check out Dream Quest's reel from 1980 -1984. I have a renewed appreciation for the folks doing visual effects in the days before computer graphics, and I find Scott Squires' voiceover incredibly helpful in uncovering the multi-pass in-camera world from the days of yore. I especially enjoy when Scott throws out the measurements of the models and miniatures, and goes into detail about compositing (which was more than likely painting on the original camera neg - no opportunities for mistakes!) and in-camera "mattes" for the matte paintings.
Susan's Weekly News Mashup: Friday 11 Nov 2011
Wow – last week was so busy I didn’t even have time for my favorite pastime – surfing the ‘web for the unusual, the interesting. But just in time for Friday, here it is!
Enlightening Evening With Digital Domain & the "Real Steel" Team

"Game of Thrones" Opening Sequence Wins an Emmy!
Elastic - the directing arm of Escape Studios US Advisory Board partner A52 - has won an Emmy for the opening sequence of "Game of Thrones".
MÖBIUS Kit Provides Visual Tricks
I loved watching this project unfold. It combines a lot of my favorite things about art - clever usage of outdoor public space, collaboration, a great soundtrack and some pretty neat visual tricks. For extra fun, check out the making-of documentary on the same page. Note that you can purchase your own miniature MÖBIUS kit to make your own installation! Let us know if you do - we'd love to see it.
Real-time Displacement in the Wild
I am a science geek and constantly troll the web for interesting natural phenomenon. I recently ran across this video. Watch the whole thing.
Stunning Music Video Created in After Effects!
This piece called "Yes I Know" from Memory Tapes, is so very nice. Director Eric Epstein did not use any 3d applications in the making of this video - just After Effects and careful camera work by his brother, Aaron Epstein. If you can, just enjoy the look of the video. If you must (and I just "had" to) check out the making of here.
Pour Me A Painting
I recently stumbled across the gallery of Holton Rower and was intrigued by his use of acrylics and the dimensionality of his work.
Sky Diving Ballet Anyone?
All I can say is this is very very cool. I wonder what kind of core you need to be able to accomplish this. I'm going back to Pilates - NOW!
You Can Make Cicada Princess A Reality
Motionographer recently posted a nice behind-the-scenes clip and short article about Mauricio Baiocchi's self-financed venture called "Cicada Princess". When complete, "Cicada Princess" will be a 5 minute IMAX piece and a book outlining the short lives of the cicadas, emphasizing how they spend their lives underground only to come out for the party of their lives.
Old Spice: Behind the Scenes
I love this making-of Old Spice "Scent Vacation" piece I found on youtube. Our friends at The Mill had a hand in making this look pretty for sure - the real mastery is in the acting and the practical gags used to make this all happen in one take. The Old Spice spots are hilarious anyway - I recommend watching the making-of, then appreciate the final spot. Well done all!
Advisory Board Member Andy Hall Directs for Ben & Jerry's
Escape Studios Advisory Board member Andy Hall has just finished these delicious looking spots for Ben & Jerry's. The spots were created using a combination of stop-motion animation and CGI, and took about 6 weeks to complete. The shoot was only one day and everything but the hand is CG. Hopefully the team at Elastic got plenty of samples of the product to put them in the correct frame of mind.
Phun Phat Beats and Maya Madness
I love this video!! Soon to be available in STEREOSCOPIC 3D!!! Get your old school fix and relive those minecraft and teris days. And hum the tune for days.
Is Sitting Killing You?
This infographic has been making the rounds today. Striking colors, right? Coincidentally, my Big Blue Ball arrived today and I plan to exercise my core (if I can ever get the darned thing blown up) a few hours a day by balancing on it, bouncing, stretching and otherwise trying to be mobile.
Necessity Is The Mother of Invention
Wow! I just finished watching this video. No - it's not a 1.5 minute commercial for Lexus - it's an incredible demonstration of tenacity and forward thinking.
More Rube Goldberg - This Time With LEGOS!
If you've ever seen the movie "Repo Man" you know about the lattice of coincidence. Like when someone says "plate", or "shrimp", or "Plate of Shrimp". The more I blog about amazing inventions that complicate simple tasks, the more articles and evidence I see of same. Check out this one - 8 minutes long but worth every second.
More Rube Goldberg Fun
Boing Boing has an article about two grad students from Pratt spending 30 hours to build a device that takes your photo in 30 seconds. How long, do you think, before this idea will be stolen for a commercial? See my recent post. What fascinates us about doing very simple things in a complicated way?
Rube Goldberg-esque Cell Phone Cover Commercial
I kept looking for the cg and/or edits in the longs shots for this gorgeous commercial but I couldn't find them. I love how there's a little bit of "making of" incorporated at the beginning of the spot. Now, that song's stuck in my head!
Amazing Visual Tracking
Pay close attention to this guy - he has invented a remarkable visual tracking tool called the "Predator". Watch the full video as he demonstrates its prowess - there are some videos at the end that show this tool's full potential for uses in police work, zoology, object centric stabilization and usage as a virtual mouse.
How Do You Structure Your Deal?
Let's say you've finally gotten the job offer of your dreams. What do you do next? According to Scott Squires, you make sure your deal memo contains enough information to prevent any misunderstandings on anyone's part.
Spring Cleaning - NY Times Guide to Gadgets You Keep, Gadgets You Toss
Spring has arrived and it's that time of year again to decide what stays and what goes. Are you ready to upgrade your phone, donate clothes to Salvation Army or archive your classic movie collection and favorite video games?
Peeling an Orange
Check out this unusual timelapse. It's worth three minutes of your time to watch Duane Keiser paint the orange, and then "peel" it using brushstrokes. A nice glimpse into the process.
Web GL Enabled Real-time Fractal Renderer Tutorial
Here is a nice tutorial for a Web GL enabled real-time fractal renderer. Check out the tutorial, then go to this site with your newer graphics card and render out some gorgeous imagery using your Firefox 4 beta or Google Chrome browser. Show us your results!
Stitched Photos of Saturn
Look at this beautiful short that was constructed with a series of photographs - no CG at all. The movies were made by stitching together photos of Saturn from the Cassini telescope. I would love to see this in 65mm! Gorgeous work.
Real-time Capabilities in CryENGINE 3
Check out the real-time capabilities of the CryENGINE 3 from Crytek.
The Internet 3D Database--A Great Resource
Wow - here is a great resource to find 3d (context tells me that 3d is "stereo" in this instance) content: websites, artists, movies, short films, software, plug-ins, studios, developers, galleries, wallpaper, textures, reels, trailers, commercials and more.
A Brief History of Special Effects
Time Magazine has submitted a nice "Cliff's notes" version of the history of "Special Effects" in the movies. It's all here - cell animation, stop motion, explosions, water effects, CG characters, bullet time and even stereo are covered in brief here. It's always very interesting to note which movies are chosen to represent key innovations in visual effects, and this article covers "old school" versus "new school" ways of achieving effects. For example in the "doubling" section, the visual the iconic shot of twins Susan and Sharon in "The Parent Trap", wherein Disney employed some optical gadgetry to make Hayley Mills her own twin. The paragraph then goes on to explain how doubling was achieved in "The Social Network" with more complicated face replacement to create the twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss out of a single actor.
Traumgedanken is Interesting to the Eye
Maria Fischer has gathered a collection of "literary, philosophical, psychological and scientific texts" about dreams called "Traumgedanken" ("Dream Thoughts" in English). The book makes physical hyperlinks with threads, which are sewn into the pages and affixed to other pages. These threads represent the links, and the fragility of those links of thoughts and ideas to one another. In some cases, the threads are sown over the words, making them difficult to read.
Stop Motion Animation is Not Such an Easy Medium
I was sent a link to this music video today. Animated by four people, including the guitarist from the band, the video tells the story very sweetly of a mommy turtle laying eggs, and the babies' struggles to get to the ocean. Very sweet song, and beautiful stop-motion work with a not-very-easy-to-work with medium. Tell us what you think!
3D – Is the Case Really Closed?
Last week film critic Roger Ebert and file editor Walter Murch lambasted 3D, saying the technology doesn’t work with our brains and never will – case closed. Murch cited the "convergence/focus" issue as one of the main reasons 3D ends up being an “inferior and inherently brain-confusing image,” as Ebert calls it. According to Murch, the convergence/focus issue means peoples’ eyes are forced to focus at one distance and converge at another as 3D images come out of the screen. Murch goes on to say evolution hasn’t prepared the eye for this type of viewing experience. This issue, along with other visual quarks, has made 3D intolerable to Ebert, who says he’s done with the medium.

Jobs in VFX Help Make the World Go ‘Round
Cracked.com wrote an interesting article--The 5 Miserable VFX Jobs That Make Movies Possible. I read the article and thought that I’d offer an opinion on what they have to say.
Final 5 Oscar nominations for Visual Effects
Early this morning the Academy announced the final five films nominated for an Oscar for Visual Effects:
Surface Water: Amazing 3D Representations of Fractals
I can't stop watching this video simply called "Surface Detail". It was posted by someone named SubBlue on vimeo. There is some serious math involved in this piece - mesmerizing and richly textured landscape. Curious, I googled SubBlue and found his home page. It seems that he is an ex-physicist who whips up these amazing fractals when he's not working at 55degrees in Glasgow. Very inspiring work - my knitting hobby pales in comparison.
Old school Animatronics
As I am a geek, I have always been a huge fan of animatronics (dating back to the days when I was employee number 40 at Digital Domain, which was then-comprised of a partnership of Stan Winston, Scott Ross and James Cameron) and was very excited to discover Steve Johnson's youtube channel.
Water Sculpture
This should be required viewing for all FX artists. Gorgeous, in-camera effects with water. I am always blown away by people who look for the extraordinary in the every day (provided you think "every day" means a high speed camera an an all white room).
Oscar VFX Short-list
The Oscars' VFX short-list has just been announced, and the films in the running are:
"Fake It" music video
I am mesmerized by this music video from Denki Groove, directed by Hideyuki Tanaka.
Beautiful Collage Work by Matt Cusik
Check out this beautiful collage work by Matt Cusik. Truly remarkable. His attention to detail makes me think he'd be an excellent roto artist :)
Guillermo del Toro Opens New Production Studio
The Los Angeles FX scene is abuzz with the news that Guillermo Del Toro has joined forces with Motion Theory's Matthew Cullen (a director), cinematographer Guillermo Navarro and producer Javier Jiminez to create a production company called Mirada.
Pirated Software an Issue for All of Us
It was with interest that I read an article about a company called Avast that tracked its software from a licensed 14-person team in Arizona to over 774,000 computers in over 200 countries, including two in the Vatican.
