Check out this cool intro for Pictoplasma this year.
A celebration of all things wacky in the world of character design.
Pictoplasma 2012
Two Thumbs Up for John Carter from Mars
I recently went to see John Carter from Mars and after all of the negativity associated with the film I was pleasantly surprised.
Congratulations to Our Friends on Their Oscar Win
Our sincerest congratulations to our friend Angus Wall for his second consecutive Oscar win for Film Editing! Angus and Kirk Baxter won for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher. The duo won last year in the same category for The Social Network.
Words, Words, Words!
Here are some shots of our newly installed VFX tag cloud! This is something we've been thinking about creating for a while and now we have the wall real estate I thought it was time. Our Operations Director Susan O'Neal and I sat down and came up with as many VFX terms as our brains would allow, then our designer friend and gentleman Mick Hodgson from PhD worked his magic and turned it into reality.
The Joys of Children's Television
I have recently been exposed by my kids to the joys of a very special cartoon. Adventure Time is a newish series on Cartoon Network. It is by far the most inventive and original series I've seen in years. The creator Pendleton Ward has combined a ton of stuff from my childhood into a very surreal setting, a combination of Dungeons and Dragons, Felix the Cat and the humour from the likes of The Simpsons and Futurama. It is a very good watch for geek dads as well as anyone interested in the world of surreal animation.
Obama Announces New Higher Education Initiatives
As the race for the White House intensifies, I have no doubt that we’ll see a host of new plans and ideas emerge on how to tackle higher education. That’s why I wasn’t that surprised by Obama’s announcement on new initiatives in his State of the Union address. Regardless of the reasons why these are being revealed now – and there are many people who link these to Obama’s need to appeal to a key portion of the electorate – we surely need to encourage and applaud any moves to improve the plight of students who face very high levels of debt.
Escape Studios LA Celebrates the Season
It’s hard to believe we’ve been holding classes for six weeks already. To celebrate that and the holidays, we had a little gathering of friends, students and colleagues. We appreciate all the hard work that’s gone into getting things off the ground and with the pending holiday season, that’s cause to celebrate. Cheers to all and thanks—it’s truly been a team effort.
Looking Forward to Working with The Foundry in LA
Today our friends from The Foundry came by to discuss some great stuff that we'll be doing together here in LA in the new year. It was great to see Claudia and Tom and enjoy some great Thai food from our fantastic local restaurant Pot and Pan. Tom will be moving to LA in the new year and we're really looking forward to working closely with them. Look out for some really great collaborations in 2012!
On Top Of The Dolomites
Now try to create this in CG, it fills me with hope to see such intrepid human beings, resourceful beyond belief.
Should Kids Learn How Computers Work?
It was interesting for me to be greeted by a familiar voice whilst getting a little piece of home form BBC Radio 4.
Rupert Wyatt and the Making of Rise of The Planet of the Apes
A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to get some time with the Director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rupert Wyatt to talk about working with CG, character development and the process of working with WETA Digital, the VFX house responsible for King Kong and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I hope you enjoy the interview.
Take An Insider's View of David Lynch's Production and Creative Process
If all things Lynch are good and Dom Perignon is great then this is the best combination imaginable.
Predicting the Future of Technology
In true Microsoft style here is a video predicting the future use of technology. It's just a shame it looks so dull and Scandinavian! Where's the sci - fi creativity, they should let Steven Spielberg do their videos.
John Leonti from The Mill, LA Tells the Tale of the Making of “Michael”
We sat down with John Leonti from The Mill, Los Angeles and asked a few questions about their work on “Michael.” He pointed us to this article then proceeded to regale us with tales from the experience of making the video for YouTube and more.
Escape Plan: Our Teaching Methodology
I have recently been talking to many industry people here in L.A., explaining what our plans are and where we’ve come from. This has got me thinking about why we teach the way we do, what advantages it offers and how it fits within a learning styles framework.
Elastic’s Shiny New Website is a Nice Showcase
Our friends over at Elastic have a brand new and very shiny website. Take a look at the director’s reels on the homepage for an insight into the great work they've produced.
National Education Standards are Still a Can of Worms
Almost everyone has an opinion on National Education Standards. This article in the Washington Post argues that they don't work and won't work, despite the fact that over 40 States in this great country of ours have some sort of set standards.
Powerful Post Visualization Tools Drive Director's Ideas
I was recently sent this really interesting insight into the ever adapting creative process film directors are now using when working with CG.
Film Directors, Producers and Post Production People Don the Spandex and Lycra for Fireflies West
They gather in spandex and lycra for a cause… It’s for the City of Hope Hospital and it’s a long, long bike ride (550 plus miles) down the coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles. “Who are these crazy people that should choose such pain to raise dollars for a hospital?” I hear you ask. It’s a group of film directors, production, post-production and advertising executives hosted by Rapha, RSA Films and The Mill.
3D Designed Surfboards Sure to Cause a Wave
Here's an interesting take on using 3D software to develop something revolutionary. The ongoing question of using sustainable and eco friendly materials in the construction of surfboards has led Mike Sheldrake to innovate on the process of board building. Surfboards that look half way between an aeroplane wing and wireframe computer model certainly are very cool looking, I'd be interested to see how they ride.
A Beautiful Bike Ride for a Cause
At the end of September I will be riding my bike with a group of 30 some MAMILs (that’s middle aged men in lycra, for those of you that don’t know) 550 miles down the spectacular coastline from San Francisco to Los Angeles. That’s a bit of a distance. It’s known as the Fireflies West Ride and it is the sister event to one that travels from London to Cannes every year just across the Atlantic.
Ron Gilad's Art Resonates with 3D Artists
I stumbled across this artist's site the other day. For 3d artists these sculptures will resonate deeply - and one of them is almost a real world version of the original Escape Studios logo.
The Complexity of a Simple Water Drop
I recently found this music video "High Hopes", which is a collaboration by Romain Glé and Thomas Séon. The amazing slo-mo water shot at 7000 fps really looks like it is the invention of 3D wizardry. Take a look and feel humbled by the complexity of a simple drop of water.
We're Almost There! LA Campus Update
A lot of progress has been made to our Santa Monica campus since the last we reported. Lighting is installed, reception desk is built, glass is in place, walls are up and paint is going on. Next steps after we finish painting the walls are to install the furniture and add the finishing touches with the glass and wall graphic treatments.
Visual Illusion Street Art
Here's a link to some fantastic street art, I particularly love the ones that produce a visual illusion - the stairs are my favorite.
A Glimpse Into Manhattan In Motion
Photographer, Josh Owens demonstrates what you can capture in a month of hotel hopping in NYC in this video, Manhattan in Motion. Owens' city time-lapse differs from most others with his attention to detail where he shows glimpses of people in offices, pedestrians at the Astor Place Cube sculpture, taxi rides and many sunrises and sunsets. This piece highlights his artistic approach and amazing photography.
Futuristic Monuments That Look CG
Here is an incredible collection of photographs by Jan Kempenaers. All of the images are from his book, simply titled Spomenik. You can find the book for sale through his publisher Roma Publications or on Amazon.
May 26th LA Campus Update
More progress has been made this week. The color palette is selected, vinyl graphics are being designed for the glass walls surrounding the staff offices and the reception desk is being fabricated. Our crew is working feverishly to get the space ready for this summer so we can welcome guests to visit for a tour when the doors open to the public.
LA Campus Update: The Build Out Is Underway
It’s a very exciting time for us at Escape Studios and I wanted to share an update with you. After some delay, the renovation of our LA Campus is back on track.
Autism Speaks: 3D Interactive Installation
I stumbled across this link the other day and was compelled by the clever use of gaming technology to raise awareness about autism.
Inspiration from Mick Ebeling
Recently I received a link from a member of the Fireflies in LA – a group of cyclists that raise money and awareness for Leukemia research. Mick Ebeling, will be riding this year for the first time with the Fireflies and in honor of father and support for his mother-in-law.

Q&A With New US Advisory Board Member, Andrew Bell of MPC
It’s my pleasure to welcome another new US advisory board member, Andrew Bell from MPC. As Head of Production for Commercials, Andrew has a lot to contribute and brings over ten years of experience at MPC to our advisory board. When he’s not out winning business, Andrew manages some high profile agencies and projects. And the Winner Is…Inception
Watching the Oscars last night, I didn’t really need to hold my breath to see what movie would win for visual effects. Each nominated film had amazing visual effects, but it was pretty obvious to me which one was going to be the winner. Inception took the honor with truly innovative and stunning work from Double Negative. Congrats to Paul Franklin, who sits on our advisory board, Peter Bebb, Chris Corbould and Andrew Lockley, who worked on the film.
Check Out the Progress at our LA Campus
We have taken possession of our new space and are knocking down walls and getting ready for classes to start. We want to keep you up to the minute with our progress so we’ll be uploading visuals on an ongoing basis to keep you in the loop. The first photos you see here are some snaps from my iPhone from the day after demolition began. Our space is going to take on a whole new dimension as we move forward so stay tuned to our blog over the coming weeks to see the changes as they take place.
Los Angeles, We’re Here and Getting Our Campus Up and Running
We’ve made our way to Los Angeles and are finding our way around now. The city is fantastic and the people are interesting and exciting. We have a new campus in the process of being built out and are truly excited to show our new students the finished product.
Escape Studios Announces CG Whiz Winner 2010
It's finally time to announce the winner of Escape Studios CG Whiz competition 2010! But, before we go on to give you the name of the winner, just a few details. We looked at over 170 entries to create the shortlist and the competition was so tough because there was so much good material to review. We were impressed by the caliber of work submitted this year and would like to say a big thank everyone who submitted a demo reel.
To be academic or not, that is the question...
Here's a great piece of animation which illustrates something I care deeply about, the education system.
Welcome to our new US Website!
We’re thrilled to have our brand new site and blog up and running. We know from looking at the computer graphics market here and speaking to people at SIGGRAPH that it’s been a long time coming and something our students and industry partners have wanted.
